Evaluations
Our therapists specialize in the evaluation and treatment of all diagnoses. An evaluation consists of a concise and thorough review of the following:
- Range of motion
- Strength
- Sensation
- Edema
- Fine motor coordination
- Skin/scar integrity
Exercise
An exercise program is developed on the first visit to specifically meet the needs of each individual. The individual exercise program promotes a faster and easier recovery and a quicker return to everyday activities. Each exercise program is continuously monitored and upgraded to progress smoothly toward goals. An individualized exercise program may consist of:
- Range of motion
- Stretching
- Strengthening
- Proper lifting techniques
- Flexibility
- Balance and stability
Strengthening Program
Strengthening is an important part of an individual's recovery. Exercises are targeted to specific muscles and functions impaired by injury or improper use (such as poor posture). Our therapists continuously review individual programs to find the proper challenge for each individual to return to his/her functional demands.
Modalities
Therapists utilize physical agent modalities to decrease pain, promote healing, decrease edema, and increase range of motion. Examples of modalities utilized are:- Ultrasound
- Iontophoresis
- Electrical stimulation
- Transcutaneous neuromuscular electrical stimulation
- Hi-Volt Pulsed Galvanic Stimulation
- Laser
Splinting
Our therapists are highly skilled and experienced in the fabrication of custom splinting techniques. Splints are fabricated for a multitude of purposes such as:- To protect a joint after surgical procedure (i.e. tendon repair surgery)
- To promote increased range of motion (i.e. finger fracture)
- To rest a joint in order to promote healing (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome)
Dressings/Wound Care
Wound care is often necessary following surgery or certain traumas. A healing wound needs to be evaluated and monitored on a regular basis to promote optimal healing. Therapists assist with wound care treatment in the following ways:- identification of appropriate wound dressings
- instruction in /performance of dressing changes
- wound cleansing and debriedement
Scar management/Mobilization
Surgical incision and traumatic wound healing can leave skin integrity compromised which can result in possible loss of range of motion, increased scar sensitivity, and unfavorable scar appearance. Our therapists assist with scar management utilizing:
- Desensitization techniques
- Scar massage
- Scar compression
- Modalities
- Splinting
Edema Control
Swelling occurs following trauma or surgery and should be addressed to prevent loss of range of motion, strength, and/or function. Swelling is treated by our therapists using the following techniques:- Compression garments
- Edema massage
- Icing techniques
Equipment/Supplies
Injuries, surgeries, and degenerative disorders (such as arthritis) can lead to swelling, loss of motion, loss of strength, and pain making daily activities like cooking, bathing, dressing, and working extremely difficult. Our therapists identify and instruct in the use of appropriate equipment to promote the most pain-free and independent performance of everyday activities.
